BAND PARENTS' UPDATE

7/31/2023

Greetings Marching Band families! The GHHS Marching Bobcats are off and running - this is a LOT going on this week and next so please read closely and of course let us
know if you have any questions. REMINDER that there is also lots of info available on our web site, including a "Bobcat Band & Orchestra 101" chapter on typical autumn events, a link to the official band department calendar, a communications tab where you can find all of our emails, and a front page full of updates and important info.
  1. SUMMER UNIFORM ORDERS: The summer uniform order form is now available by clicking here. ALL FRESHMEN and NEW MEMBERS MUSTplace an order for the summer uniform items, and any returning members MAY place an order if they need a different size or need to replace a lost or damaged item. With apologies for the tight turnaround (we're an all-volunteer organization, folks), ALL ORDERS ARE DUE NO LATER THAN THIS THURSDAY AUGUST 3 in order to have the items in time for the first performance (Falco Park concert on August 13). Thank you for attending to this quickly! As always, confidential financial assistance is available if needed, please contact Mrs. Olis directly for details. Reply to this message with any other questions.

  2. BAND CAMP WRAP UP! There are FAR TOO MANY people to thank for the success of our students' Band Camp experience last week so we won't list them here, but fear not! We have a story up on our web site which includes those important acknowledgements, plus all the photos we gathered from the week. Check it out by clicking here!

  3. VOLUNTEERING! The fall signup genius is now available for concessions, equipment truck driving, and uniform check in and check out - please click here to find it. There are over 120 slots on this signup, and about 53 students in the Marching Band - so you can do the math on that (I can't, because I make it a point never to do math in public....). The point is, we need a LOT of help! Please consider claiming as many slots as you can, and make sure your spouse, co-parents, and other friends with band students do as well. The concessions operation is a MAJOR fundraiser for the Band Parents Association and we use the funds we raise there to support loads of student programming, including that great week of Band Camp that we just sent all those student to last week. Please help!

  4. SPONSORSHIP: Do you own a business or have a contact at a business that might be interested in sponsoring the instrumental music programs at Grandview Heights Schools? Our new sponsorship levels are now available! Please click here for more information, and encourage your contacts to submit their forms by August 11 for prime placement on the sponsorship banner we will display at all home games.

  5. DECAL DRIVE: The fall Decal Drive is also a significant fundraiser for the Band Parents Association, occurring this year on Sunday August 20. All HS musicians are required to participate, and we need several adult volunteers as well, stay tuned for that. But before then, we need your yards! If you would be willing to have a sign promoting Decal Drive placed in your yard for the week preceding the Decal Drive event, please click here to email Decal Drive chair Molly Schmied. Include your name and street address, please. We are hoping to find 25-30 homes around Grandview and Marble Cliff, and we need this info asap!
  6. EVENING REHEARSALS: GHHS Marching Band begins its evening rehearsal schedule this week, with 8-10pm rehearsals on Monday 7/31 and Wednesday 8/2. There are two more next week, and then five more scheduled during the week of home games throughout the school year. All rehearsals begin in the GHHS Band Room, and students should always come prepared with marching shoes, water bottles, their instruments, and flip folders because there will always be outdoor marching, weather permitting. Please remember that these rehearsals are required and any absences should be reported to Mrs. Olis in advance if at all possible.
  7. FORMAL UNIFORM FITTING: all students (other than seniors, who will be fitted this week) will be asked to come in next week (time/day TBD) to meet with volunteers who will fit them for a formal fall marching uniform. Each student is assigned a uniform that will be kept at the school throughout the season and checked out to them for performances and then checked back in. Typically students don't start wearing the formal uniform for football games until 3-4 games into the season when the weather is cooler; however, students will wear them for the group photo, which is why fittings must occur now.
  8. PHOTO DAY: The Athletic Department schedules a single photo day for all fall middle and high school sports teams, this year on Wednesday August 9 from 9am to 2pm, and the group photo of the GHHS Marching Band will be taken then as well. We will be given a specific time slot at some point (and will share it when we know it), and we will also have order forms available for anyone who would like to purchase a copy of the photo. More to come!
  9. MEET THE TEAM EVENT: Finally, the GH Touchdown Club is hosting a meet the team event on Saturday August 5 from 3-4pm at the GHHS gym; our GHHS Marching Band has been invited to perform, and the event is free and open to the community, so please come and support your marching Bobcat and the football Bobcats too. Immediately following the event, there will be a family-friendly cornhole tournament at the Columbus Italian Club with music, food truck, drinks, free bingo, a 50/50 raffle, and silent auction. Click here to register for the cornhole tournament.
