Truly one of the highlights of this incredible band season. This week, we look to

finishing strong with Season in Review and our final regular season football game. PLEASE NOTE: Our first playoff football game (assuming we stay in the top 12) is currently on Halloween, which unfortunately means our football, cheer, and band students will miss the Grandview Trick or Treat that is scheduled for the same evening.
**Best of luck to our fall sports teams who are in tournament season!**

Evening Rehearsals

We have ONE more Evening Rehearsal for this season and that number will not increase. All rehearsals are considered required and will be calculated into your grade. Exceptions to the requirement are (1) for athletes who have traveling matches which return later than 9:00PM, or, (2) on a case-by-case basis as needed. Work and non-Grandview Heights activities should be scheduled around Evening Rehearsals; please submit the dates above to your work management or advisors.
Our FINAL night rehearsal is THIS Thursday, October 16, 8:00-10:00PM.

All band members make a commitment when they join the band. These commitments extend to attending all rehearsals and performances. The dates of such are published and made known well in advance. Additionally, directors ensure reminders of rehearsals and performances are part of the daily rehearsal schedule. It is expected that all members will be in attendance at all scheduled events.
Should a student be unable to make a particular rehearsal or performance, then a parent/guardian must notify the director via email preferably two weeks in advance of the requested absence.
In the event of a medical or family emergency, the parent/guardian should contact Mrs. Olis at a time most convenient to the family’s needs by phone or email. Medical and/or family emergencies are automatically excused. This includes students who are marked ‘Excused’ absent from school on the day of a performance.
Unexcused absences can result in lowered grades and loss of permission to travel. An unexcused performance can never be made up. Actions or lack thereof speak louder than words. As stated previous, band is co-curricular. As such, work is not an excuse. Communicate clearly with your employer and well in advance. Missing school for work is unexcused; therefore; missing band for work is ALSO UNEXCUSED.

Jazz Concert - Wednesday, October 15, 7:00PM

The 2024-2025 High School Jazz Ensemble will open their performance season with their first concert on Wednesday, October 15th at 7:00PM. The concert will take place in the High School Auditorium; it is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there!
Attire: Black on Black on Black with a pop of color

Band Parent Association - October Meeting

Our next Band Parent Association meeting is scheduled for THIS THURSDAY, October 16 at 6:30PM in the high school band room. We hope to see you there!

Marching Band Season-in-Review - Thursday, October 23 - 7:00PM

It’s hard to believe it already, but our Annual Marching Band Season-in-Review is quickly approaching! This event showcases our traditional pre-game show and all four half-time shows. All family and friends are welcome and HIGHLY encouraged to attend this special event.

Attendance/Warm Up/Review: 6:20pm
March In: 6:50pm
Performance Begins: 7:00pm

Ohio State University Honor Band Festival

Grandview Heights High School Band Students are invited to participate in this year's Ohio State University Honor Band Festival to take place on January 23-25, 2026. One of the longest-running and finest events of its kind, this annual offering welcomes students in grades 9–12 to campus. Outstanding musicians, selected from director nominations, will be placed by pre-recorded video audition into one of three bands for a weekend of quality music-making. The weekend will conclude with concerts on Sunday afternoon in Weigel Auditorium. Free and open to the public.

Interested students should see Mrs. Olis for a nomination form. If selected, there will be a fee for attendance, but no money is needed at this time. Nomination forms are due by Tuesday, October 28.

Solo and Ensemble - Saturday, January 17, 2026
Each year, the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) sponsors a Solo and Ensemble event for instrumental and vocal music students. Solo and Ensemble Contest provides students in Grades 9-12 with the opportunity to perform, display their talents, and receive constructive comments as well as a rating for their performances by a qualified adjudicator. It is to be used as a tool for performance improvement while garnering positive musical experiences for young musicians. Students may choose to take a solo, play in a group with their friends, or do both. This event is VOLUNTARY and takes place at Pickerington North High School OR Pleasant View Middle School on Saturday, January 17, 2026 from 8am-5pm. Put your flip and other items in the bleachers and your instrument in the opposite endzone for pregame. **Our football team is currently projected to play in the postseason. We are anticipating that we may have football games on Friday nights well into November. I’d like to ask for your help in keeping these as open as possible for potential football playoff games. I completely understand that other commitments may have already been scheduled or may come up unexpectedly. If at all possible, please try to avoid scheduling any events or activities on Fridays in November, just in case. I truly appreciate your support and flexibility, as it helps us ensure that our band can perform at its best and support our football team.**

The traditional Homecoming Parade will step off from the Fairview Ave. parking lot at 6:00PM. For new band parents - the parade route is 1st Ave to Grandview Ave to 3rd Ave and back to the stadium. You’re welcome and encouraged to come cheer on the band!!

Evening Rehearsals
We have two more Evening Rehearsals for this season and that number will not increase. Both rehearsals are required and will be calculated into your grade. Exceptions to the requirement are (1) for athletes who have traveling matches which return later than 9:00PM, or, (2) on a case-by-case basis as needed. Work and non-Grandview Heights activities should be scheduled around Evening Rehearsals; please submit the dates above to your work management or advisors.

Our next night rehearsal is THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 from 8:00-10:00pm.

Traditional Uniform - Reminder
The band will continue to wear its ‘traditional’ or ‘formal’ uniform this week. There are several components to the uniform:

Jacket
Trousers/Pants
Row Shirt
White Marching Shoes
White Gloves (except percussion) - Freshman and other students who ordered gloves during the summer uniform orders will have those distributed Friday night during warm-ups. (Additional gloves will be available to purchase Friday night for $5/pair)
Long White Socks
Hat

Traditional Uniform - Policies and Procedures - Reminder

All uniform parts listed above are required - students who do not pass inspection will not march at halftime. Parents - please make sure your student has all items before leaving the house - especially LONG white socks, gloves (if needed) and their Row Shirt.
All members must be ‘fully dressed’ unless instructed otherwise by the director(s). This includes jackets fully zipped, hats on, etc.
Accommodations will be made in extreme temperature situations. Example - students will be instructed to remove their band jacket and fold to put on top of their band hat.
Uniforms (jacket, pants, hats, parkas) are checked out and checked back in before/after each use. Students are required to rehang all items and turn in all items before they are dismissed.

If your student has misplaced their flip, it is their responsibility to replace it. Flip folders are available from Stanton’s Sheet Music (330 South Fourth St), Music & Arts (Graceland Shopping Center), Buckeye Brass (7445 Montgomery Dr, Plain City), or online. Flip folders come standard with 5 ‘windows.’ It is recommended you purchase extra windows to accommodate all the music distributed.

Music/Flip Folders will be checked and periodically throughout the season and is calculated into your student’s grade as class preparation. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Capital University Band Festival
Grandview Heights High School Band Students are invited to participate in this year's Capital University Band Festival to take place on November 14-15, 2025. Students will have the opportunity to participate in one of three director-nominated honor bands. Students in all three bands will participate in masterclasses led by Conservatory faculty and alumni and hear performances by Capital University's bands, as well as the Columbus Academy Concert Band.

Interested students should see Mrs. Olis for a nomination form. Please triple check your availability for the dates before turning in a form! If selected, there will be a fee for attendance (approx. $150), but no money is needed at this time. Nomination forms are due by Tuesday, September 23.

Band Handbook
Believe it or not, there is a band handbook that gives parents and students tons of information about the band program! I am resurrecting it this year to help keep us all accountable. Please read through the handbook with your parent/guardian and fill out the google form at the end stating you have read the material.

**Our bus trip to Chesapeake this Friday is 2.5 hrs. We will be taking coach buses to accommodate for the long travel time. Additionally, the band and orchestra boosters will be providing a sack dinner for students to take on the bus. Please feel free to send your child with extra snacks and money for additional food at the game. Students may want to bring movies for the bus ride (PG-13 and under) and don’t forget your phone charger!**

Ox Roast Pit Lighting - THIS Thursday, September 4

The Bobcat Boosters Ox Roast Pit Lighting is THIS Thursday evening. All band members will be responsible for reporting to the Stevenson Elementary parking lot at 9:00pm. Students will be responsible for transportation to and from Stevenson, including instruments. We will line up at Stevenson, march down to the Ox Roast, perform songs throughout the event, then march out. We should be finished around 10:15pm. Once we are finished, students will have 20 minutes to return to the band room to drop off instruments. If your student would rather bring their instrument back to school Friday morning, that is also an option. Dress is summer uniform.

NOTE: All large instruments (baritone, sousaphone, and drums) will need to transport their instruments to and from Stevenson.

Congratulations to our seniors for whom that was their last,

first game and for our freshmen for whom it was their first, first game! Now we gear up for a THURSDAY NIGHT game this week at Whetstone.

Summer Uniform
The band will be performing in their summer uniform for the first few games (still pending delivery). If the summer uniform is not available again this week, we will wear the same uniform as game 1.
