BOBCAT BAND/ORCHESTRA 101: THE SUMMER
For the HS Marching Band, the summer is mostly about preparing for and heading off to Band Camp. Other performing groups do not have summer responsibilities, but the first of three major fundraising efforts occurs in mid-August and we welcome all parents' support!
Late May, Blue Star Mothers event: the city of Grandview Heights traditionally holds this event on the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend at Memorial Park (Northwest and Oxley Blvds), and a small group of MB/CB students will perform. Typically mandatory for current seniors and squad leaders only, at the discretion of the HS director.
Late May, Memorial Day parade: the GHHS marching band performs in the Grandview Heights Memorial Day parade, which occurs on the Saturday before Memorial Day every year. Parade route is First Avenue, from Cambridge Blvd to Pierce Field. This performance is typically mandatory for all MB members from the previous school year.
Early to mid-June, uniform orders: orders and payment for MB uniform purchases will be due. All rising freshmen and new members need to purchase the Band logo polo shirt and shorts, as well as marching shoes and gloves, through GHBPA. Returning members in need of new or replacement items may also order at this time. Pricing and order information will be shared at school and concerts, and via email and other communication methods.
End of June, Band Camp deadlines: forms and payment for band camp will typically be due at this time.
Mid-July, pre Band Camp rehearsals: the week before Band Camp is “pre Band Camp,” a week of rehearsals at the high school. These are typically two hours in length. Monday’s session is for squad leaders and percussion only. Tuesday includes that group as well as freshmen and other new members. All members report Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Mandatory for all MB members.
Late July, Band Camp: typically a five-night sleepaway camp experience at a local college/university (Wittenberg as of 2018) to prepare for the coming football season. Students depart Sunday afternoon and return Friday afternoon. Band camp requires significant parent volunteer support for student check-in at the HS on Sunday, overnight chaperones in the dorms, and various activities throughout the week. Mandatory for all MB members.
Late July, Last Night of Band Camp: typically there is a special event for seniors, with senior parent volunteers assisting in planning and executing.
Late July through Early August, evening rehearsals: between the end of Band Camp and the start of the school year, there are typically two evening rehearsals per week, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 8-10pm. Mandatory for all MB members.
Mid-August, Falco Park outdoor concert:the traditional “kickoff” of the GHHS MB season, at Falco Park in Marble Cliff. The band will perform selections from the music for the upcoming season (no marching). A handful of parent volunteers are necessary to help with setup and tear down.
Mid-August, Decal Drive: this is the first of GHBPA’s three major FUNDRAISING efforts during the season (the others are fall football concessions and the spring Cake fundraiser). Band students go door-to-door throughout Grandview, typically on a Sunday evening, to distribute band decals and collect donations in support of the Grandview bands programs. Parent volunteers are necessary to chaperone students and to assist with checking in donations at the end of the evening. Mandatory for all MB/CB members.
