BAND PARENTS' UPDATE

8/16/2021

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy - it's BACK TO SCHOOL WEEK here in Grandview Heights! We know this is practically a national holiday for most parents, and we hope you and your
students are excited about what lies ahead. We here at GHBPA central definitely are! We are also excited about how awesome our GHHS Marching Band students sounded at last night's Falco Park kickoff concert - it sure is great to see our students making music together again!

Here are a few important announcements from the GH Band Parents Association:
  1. NEXT BAND PARENTS MEETING: if you are receiving this message, then YOU are a Grandview Heights Band Parent, and you're welcome to join us for our next general meeting, this Thursday 8/19 at 6:30pm in the sparkling new Media Center of the NEW Middle School building. Hear about volunterr opportunities, learn how to get more involved, and enjoy the use of a terrific new meeting space. Hope to see you there!
  2. WELCOME 5TH GRADE PARENTS! We have recently received the student rosters for 5th grade band for this academic year and are therefore thrilled to welcome 5th grade parents to our mailing list! The Grandview Heights Band Parents Association is a fundraising group that supports all of our band students in the District, in grades 5-12. You can read more about us and our mission here. The funds we raise are used to purchase music rights, purchase and repair school-owned instruments, support guest artists programs, and subsidize the cost of various student activities for band students across all grade levels in Grandview. Naturally, this doesn't happen without a whole lot of help from all of our band parents - and this now includes you! Please consider getting involved and signing up to volunteer at one or more of our fundraising activities during the year. In addition to periodic email distributions like this one, we will also communicate reminders and announcements via our GHBandParents Facebook page - it is a private group, so please search for it and ask to join if you are interested.
  3. CONCESSIONS VOLUNTEERS: Hey, speaking of volunteering. . . .we really need some help this FRIDAY AUGUST 20. Running the concessions stands at all Bobcat home football games is a major source of fundraising for the Band Parents. Our brand new (and very awesome) Concessions Committee Chair Brenda Parker has been hard at work all summer redesigning and streamlining our concesssions processes, and I promise: it is super easy work. It's also VERY fun, and a great way to get involved and see friends out in the community after so many long months of isolation. Middle school and jazz ensemble parents are especially ideal for this work, since you probably don't have a student marching on the field, but we welcome all comers of course! Please, please, PLEASE everyone consider helping us out - WE CANNOT DO THIS WITHOUT YOU.  You can find the signupgenius here - and hey, while you're there, feel free to sign up for a few different slots in different weeks!
  4. YOUTH JAZZ OPPORTUNITY: students in grades 7 through 12 are eligible to participate in the Columbus Jazz Arts Group's renowned Youth Jazz Program. There are several different audition-level groups available (NOTE: auditions are this week so please act fast!), but importantly there is also a Youth Jazz Lab opportunity where no audition or previous jazz experience is required. If your student has any interest at all in learning more about jazz music and performance, this is a tremendous local resource, and we strongly encourage you to consider it! Mr. Herrmann is very happy to talk further with you or your student if you have any questions, so please don't hesitate to contact him directly if your student has an interest.
  5. DECAL DRIVE REMINDER: Our GHHS Bands students will be going door-to-door throughout the community this Sunday Aug 22 from 6pm to 8pm. (For details on when and where to be if you are volunteering, please visit the signupgenius.) For everyone, please spread the word and ask your local friends and family to be ready to support our band students when they come calling. And hey, if you have friends or family who aren'tlocal, or who don't happen to be home on Sunday evening, please let them know that we welcome their support as well! Anyone can donate, any time, by clicking the yellow "donate" button at the top of our web page, so please feel free to share the link and help get our message out.
  6. BAND CAMP VIDEO: Last but not least this week, as a thank you to our major 2021 Band Camp sponsors (Bobcat Boosters and GH/MC Education Foundation), we have assembled this video montage of Band Camp memories. Check it out, and if you don't get some goosebumps well, I'll pay you a nickel! Those of you with younger band students, please share this with them as well - it's a great inside look at all the fun and great memories yet to come.
