Please feel free to contact me if you are requesting additional information concerning this trip. Jennifer Olis GHHS Instrumental Music Director [email protected] What is OMEA Adjudicated Events? For music to be indispensable to learning and life, it must be more than a shallow, passing experience for the student. Increased proficiency increases enjoyment, and competence begets respect for competence. Quality is not a limiting factor for the individual, but puts within his or her grasp an otherwise inaccessible treasure store of the world’s cultural riches. Archibald T. Davidson has written: “Zeal for fine music...grows out of an experience of the satisfactions that spring only from association with the highest manifestations of musical art.”It is to these ends that the Ohio Music Education Association sponsors Adjudicated Events each year. OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) Large Group Adjudicated Event (sometimes referred to as "contest") is a performance competition for large ensembles in which each group performs three selections for a panel of three judges. Each judge provides written and recorded critiques of the performance, and then issues a rating on a scale of I to V, with “I” being the superior rating. The ratings from all three judges are brought together to form one composite rating (i.e. I, I, II = composite I). New for this year, schools are being offered the opportunity to experience a clinic with a fourth judge immediately following their performance. This clinic gives the students the chance to work with another expert who will provide invaluable musical insight that can immediately be put into practice. In OMEA Adjudicated Events, each ensemble is evaluated on their own performance rather than being compared to other groups. This is not a "first place," "second place" type event, and it is not possible to "win.” Any group can receive a superior rating of "I,” depending on the level of their performance and skills, however receiving a superior rating means your students are among the top in the state. This event is free and open to the public. Parents wishing to attend are welcome to ride the bus, follow behind, or meet us there. If you are planning on coming to support us, please read on for more important details. OMEA regulations strictly prohibit the use of recording devices, except for the recordings made by the judges. Still or motion pictures are not to be taken in the performances. Any defiance or violation of this policy puts the performing group at great risk for disqualification. Parents and students, please leave all cameras at home on this day. Please remember to turn off cell phones and keep them put away inside the performance room. THE OMEA RATING SCALE: RATING I—An outstanding performance, with very few technical errors and exemplifying a truly musical expression. This rating should be reserved for the truly outstanding performance. RATING II—An unusual performance in many respects, but not worthy of the highest rating due to minor defects in performance, ineffective interpretation or improper instrumentation. RATING III—An acceptable performance but not outstanding. Showing accomplishment and marked promise, but lacking one or more essential qualities. RATING IV—A poor performance showing many technical errors, poor musical conception, lack of interpretation, incomplete instrumentation or lacking in any of the other essential qualities. RATING V—A very poor performance indicating deficiencies in most of the essential factors and indicating that much careful attention should be given to the fundamentals of good performance. This rating should be used sparingly and only when it is possible to cite major faults. Comments are closed.
