In addition to all the other ways they have contributed to GHBOB's success over the last many years, our friends Janna Thompson-Chordas and Molly Schmied have also been the leaders of our incredibly important DECAL DRIVE. The Decal Drive is one of our three MAJOR fundraising opportunities each year, annually bringing in several thousand dollars that we use to support all of our programming. High School instrumentalists and parent chaperones fan out all over Grandview Heights on a Sunday evening near the beginning of the school year, knocking on doors to raise money to support our programs. (Molly and Janna are shown here rallying the troops right before sending them out into the streets for the 2023 drive.) As you already know, Janna is outta here this year <sniff!>, and Molly will leave us next year when her last kiddo graduates. So we could REALLY use a co-chair (or two!) to work with Molly on the August 2024 Decal Drive and learn the ropes, to be prepared to take over in 2025. We are actively trying to engage our orchestra families in this effort too, so this might be a GREAT opportunity for an orchestra parent to get involved, hint hint hint hint HINT! Most of the work to organize this activity occurs in the July/early August time frame. Think you can help? Got more questions? Occasionally, we hear from parents of band or orchestra students who tell us "I am happy to help with whatever you need, but I just don't have time to be in charge of anything."
WELL, DO I HAVE GREAT NEWS FOR YOU! Many of the folks who are thinking of leading some of our most important initiatives next year have said that they simply CANNOT do it without the help of a committee. These include....
NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY for any of these roles. . . .and they are all so, SO important! If helping out with any of these initiatives sounds interesting to you, please let us know and we will add you to the list. Or lists, if you want - join them all! Think you can help? Got more questions? Comment below, or send us an email at GrandviewHeightsBOB (at gmail.com). Led this year for the third time by Catherine Elizabeth Dimes, with her new co-chair Terra Pugh Welsh, we have SEVERAL new things in store for this, the 75TH ANNUAL EVENT. Perhaps most exciting, we are thrilled that some of our Orchestra students will get in on the fun by offering their first ever CUPCAKE CONCERT at the Grandview Heights Public Library, on Wednesday of BCB week. We are also planning an AFTERCAKE social event for GHBOB parents on Friday night after cleanup is complete. Stay tuned for more details on all of that! The signupgenius is live, and we need as many of you as possible to help out - NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY, all the jobs are easy and mostly really fun (little kids + lots of cake = guaranteed hilarity), and this event will help us pull in a significant portion of our annual fundraising. Please add your name today! Think you can help? Got more questions? Comment below, or send us an email at GrandviewHeightsBOB (at gmail.com). Folks, our volunteer BLITZ seems like the perfect time to recognize the efforts of orchestra parent and SUPER VOLUNTEER Seth Metcalf, who spends countless hours supporting the efforts of our young orchestra students. Pictured here hiding in the back row of a field trip photo (our 7th through 12th grade orchestra students attended a ProMusica Chamber Orchestra performance in downtown Columbus in March of 2023), Seth regularly volunteers in the classroom with Mr. Stanley several times a week, and also serves as a field trip or concert day chaperone pretty much any time we ask him to. This is another of those volunteer gigs that wasn't established or defined anywhere - Seth just wanted to contrubute to the success of our programs and found a way to put his specific skills and time to work doing it. If you have ideas on ways to help out that we haven't come up with yet, don't be shy! Let your student's director know, or reach out to GHBOB. Think you can help? Got more questions? Now is your chance, so please sound off in the comments! Tell us what you like best about participating as a GHBOB volunteer. Why do you do it, even though your time is already so very limited? What's a favorite story or memory you have? What would you tell a parent who is considering taking on a leadership role that you once held? You can be a current volunteer, officer, or committee chair, or someone who served years and years ago - we want to hear it all, so don't be shy. And tag a friend! Think you can help? Or plan to join us on MAR 21 at 6:30PM at the GHHS BAND ROOM for our next Board meeting, to learn more! #30dayvolunteerblitzwithGHBOB #GHBOBneedsyou #andyouandyouandyou Folks, of all the important GHBOB initiatives in need of new leadership, the BAND CAMP chair has been empty the longest. We haven't had a true leader for Band Camp since 2020....and that Band Camp chair didn't even get to HAVE a Band Camp! Band Camp the next year was so uncertain due to funding issues, location challenges, and the lingering pandemic, that we just kind of threw it all together at the last minute once the School Board approved Band Camp for 2021. And it's kind of been that way ever since! But this, my friends, is simply unsustainable. (Especially with the departure of a certain GHBOB president who shall remain nameless <cough, cough, WHATEVER DOT, cough cough>). Lisa Cappell Gladman and I aren't going anywhere for now, and we can help with a LOT of it, but this team could really use a new member to help coordinate all the details and start learning the ropes. Could it be you? Please say it could be you! This is another "summer job" opportunity - most of the work happens in the weeks leading up to Band Camp in July - and then voila, you're done! It's also mostly a behind the scenes kind of thing, involving a lot of organizing and administrative work, in case that sounds like your kind of gig. And you get to feel great about doing something significant for the students of the GHHS Marching Band. Band Camp consistently ranks among our graduating seniors' top memories, absolutely every year. Sure would be awesome to bring in the parent of a rising freshman or sophomore band member, who could assist for the next couple of years and keep this important task rolling in the right direction. And what better way to celebrate than to ensure that we can keep them dressed neatly and tidily in their formal marching uniforms? You'll be SHOCKED to learn that it takes a number of parent volunteers to keep those uniforms clean and in good condition, fit and assign them to students every year, and then distribute, collect, and store them each week during football season. We are so, so, SO grateful to Lisa Cappell Gladman for leading this process for the last couple of years, with able assistance from Catherine Elizabeth and Becca Roberts (Benjamin Roberts), among others. But we can always use another couple of sets of hands for this committee, too. You do not HAVE to be able to sew a stitch--although if you can, that's a definite plus! Think you can help? Got more questions? Comment below, or send us an email at GrandviewHeightsBOB (at gmail.com). Or plan to join us on MAR 21 at 6:30PM at the GHHS BAND ROOM for our next Board meeting, to learn more! #30dayvolunteerblitzwithGHBOB #GHBOBneedsyou #andyouandyouandyou We just wanted to take this opportunity to recognize longtime VOLUNTEER announcer Brian Ball, who has been a mainstay behind the microphone for many, MANY years - but you may not be aware that Brian is a former member and president of the Band Parents Association! And although he no longer has current students in the GH instrumental music programs, he continues to volunteer his time and talents to support Grandview Heights instrumental music students by drafting and delivering the Marching Band's introductions week in and week out (even for away games), occasionally filling in as a field trip chaperone, and often attending concerts for all of our performing groups. (SEE, Dot Davis Keil, YOU DON'T HAVE TO LEAVE US!!!!) Brian is a great example of someone who found a niche and filled it, with his own particular skills, time, and abilities. If you see a similar opportunity, but we haven't identified it as a need yet - let us know or talk to your student's director. We are always willing to listen to new ideas and put them into action! Think you can help? Got more questions? Comment below, or send us an email at GrandviewHeightsBOB (at gmail.com). Or plan to join us on MAR 21 at 6:30PM at the GHHS BAND ROOM for our next Board meeting, to learn more! #30dayvolunteerblitzwithGHBOB #GHBOBneedsyou #andyouandyouandyou Then you can help GHBOB! Look, we are all raising some number of active middle and/or high schoolers, and if your house is anything like mine you already have PILES of laundry to go through on any given day. Which makes it all the more amazing that for the last couple of years, Emily Harding Gephart has agreed to sort out an extra 200 or so t-shirts at her house. Like, on PURPOSE. What am I talking about?! GHBOB annually arranges for the sourcing and ordering of concert performance t-shirts for the middle school band and orchestra students, and somebody has to manage that ordering process for us. ALL the 5th grade musicians - plus any other middle schooler who needs a new shirt - place an order, and that usually amounts to around 200 shirts to order, sort, label, and distribute. We are super grateful to Emily for leading this for the last couple years, but here's the thing: she probably isn't going to have middle school instrumental music students forever, so we may eventually have to let her off the hook. Can we put you on that hook instead? This is a job with a burst of activity in the early to mid-fall time frame, and then it's over. And good news: we take all parent payments online, so you don't have to handle any money! Think you can help? Got more questions? Or plan to join us on MAR 21 at 6:30PM at the GHHS BAND ROOM for our next Board meeting, to learn more! #30dayvolunteerblitzwithGHBOB #GHBOBneedsyou #andyouandyouandyou We had SUCH a great turnout last night for our LEAP INTO VOLUNTEERING WITH GHBOB event! Thank you so much to everyone who came and spent some time getting to know us and other Band & Orchestra parents. We had some great conversations and I think we may have even matched a few new people to new leadership roles. But even better than that, we made some new friends!
AND FEAR NOT! In case you just couldn't make it, and were worried that all the best jobs have been taken, our 30 days aren't up yet, and we still have a few more holes to fill on our roster. So stay tuned and keep watching......because by golly, THE BLITZ WILL CONTINUE! Think you can help? Got more questions? Comment below, or send us an email at GrandviewHeightsBOB (at gmail.com).
