A message to returning GHHS Band members

From mrs. olis, director of bands

  • 70% of admissions officers of the nation’s major universities say high school credit and achievement in music are significant considerations for admission
Dear GHHS Band Parents,

The coming months are filled with concerts, musicals, course registration, senior recognition, graduation, and so much more. Few people realize that spring is almost twice as busy as the fall semester.

Music is a year-round, life-changing activity that challenges your child musically, personally, and emotionally in a caring and supportive environment.

As we approach registration for next year, remember to think about the impact the band has had on your child. What did they accomplish this year? How has the time invested in band made them a better person than they might have been without?
Music does more than just make sounds, it changes the way we think and act. The skills your child will learn in band will help them be successful on the stage, in the classroom, and for the rest of their lives.

  • Emotional: Music provides a creative outlet and a break from the routine of the traditional school day. Students in music are among the highest academic performers; most report less stress and tension than their non-musical counterparts.
  • Social: Participating in musical groups promotes self confidence, team work, social skills, social networking, a sense of belonging, self-discipline, a sense of accomplishment, cooperation, responsibility, commitment, mutual support, and friendships.
  • Academic: Research has found that learning music facilitates learning other subjects and enhances skills that students inevitably use in other areas including language development, spatial-temporal skills, pattern recognition, critical thinking, and so much more.
  • Personal: Through  music, students become better people, as they develop self-discipline, confidence, commitment, responsibility, good decision making, and personal pride. They are able to do this with the support of peers in a safe and risk-free environment.

A few interesting facts related to participation in a band program all four years of high school:
  • 70% of admissions officers of the nation’s major universities say high school credit and achievement in music are significant considerations for admission
  • 107 points scored higher on the SAT for students involved in public school music programs according to the college entrance examination board
  • 66%: Lewis Thomas, Physician and Biologist, found that music majors comprise the highest percentage of accepted medical students

Music is important, and as your student selects courses for next year, I hope you will consider the positive effect music will continue to have on your child. With the impact of COVID, we need our current band members now more than ever. The legacy your child can leave behind impacting the resurgence and longevity of the band program at Grandview is critical. Please speak with your student and encourage them to continue in the band program next year - their commitment to this program throughout high school is incredibly important.

As always, feel free to contact me if you have questions or if there's anything you would like to discuss.

Musically Yours,
Mrs. Olis
